Fourth of July Pet Safety

Fourth of July Pet Safety

Do's and Don'ts for Keeping your Pup Safe this Independence Day

Fourth of July Fireworks are fun and exciting for us, but can be truly terrifying for our pets. It can cause them to go into Fight or Flight Mode, either destroying the house or leaving a Fido sized hole in the window screen. More dogs go missing and end up in shelters on Fourth of July weekend than any other time of year. According to PetAmberAlert.com, animal control sees a 30-60% increase in lost pets on July 4-6 every year. Sadly only 14% are returned to their owners. We want your dog to be safe and happy this Independence Day, so we've put together a list of Do's and Dont's to minimize the negative impact on your best friend.

DO

Do- Make sure your pup is microchipped
Do-Make sure collar and tags are on and updated
Do-Close all the windows and shades in your home
Do-Turn on the radio, TV, noise machine, or fan to drown out the sound
Do-Make sure your pup gets extra exercise throughout the day
Do-Leave a long-lasting treat for your dog before you head out

DON'T

Don't- Take your dog(s) to see fireworks displays
Don't-Leave your pup outside alone - even if you have a tall fence
Don't-Scold her/him for being scared or force her/him from their hiding place
Don't-Host your own backyard fireworks show
Don't-Let your pup chew on glow jewelry
