Yesterday while driving in Denver I looked at my car thermometer and it read 100 degrees! This got me thinking about our furry friends and how we can help them beat the heat during these dog days of summer. Plus, in Colorado we love being outside with our dogs, so here are some tips to help you and your dog get through this heat!
WATER! WATER! WATER!
It's important we make sure our friends stay hydrated and have access to fresh, cool water during these hot summer days. Lack of water can lead to dehydration and heat stroke. If you are planning adventure out with your pup bring him his own water, so you both stay hydrated and cool.
WATCH THE THERMOMETER!
Keeping an eye on the heat is very important, especially if you are planning an outing or taking your dog for a walk or an adventure during the heat of the day. If you plan to be out in the hottest point of the day with your dog then plan to use a dirt walking trail verses sidewalks and concrete. Also, choose a more shaded route that is not as long. This will help prevent your dog from burning his pads. It's always best to walk your dog first thing in the morning or later in the evening if planning a longer walk.
NEVER LEAVE YOUR PUP IN THE CAR!
It's typically 20-30 degrees plus warmer in your car than the outside temperature! It's VERY IMPORTANT you never leave your pup in the car during these hot summer days. Even in the shade for a few minutes! If it's 75 degrees outside within 10 minutes it can be 94 degrees and within 30 minutes 109 degrees. Leave your pets home if you plan to go somewhere that does not allow them inside.
CONSIDER YOUR PET'S AGE, SIZE, AND BREED
Older dogs and overweight dogs tend to heat up faster, so please be aware of your dog's breathing (panting). Breeds that have œflat-faceslike Boxers, Pugs, and Bulldogs have a lower tolerance of heat, so be extra aware with these breeds. If your dog has any medical conditions, such as heart disease, he may also have a harder time in hot weather.
SUNSCREEN FOR DOGS?
Dogs can get sunburned too! Especially breeds with white skin like American Bulldogs. If you plan to be in the sun for an extended period of time please use the pet friendly sunscreen. DO NOT USE the human sunscreen. You can purchase pet sunscreen at most local pet retailers and/or online.
