Diary of my Berkeley addition: Plumbing, electrical, roof, drywall and dust everywhere.

Our Berkeley addition is moving so fast I'm having a hard time keeping up with a real time blog of the construction. As I mentioned in the last blog, doing an addition takes up a lot of time with meeting with the contractor and picking out finishes. But luckily it has been a lot of fun and most importantly, moving along quickly.

After the framing was complete, then the plumbers came in and ran plumbing for the bathroom and all the exhausts for the house. They connected water lines to the hot water heater and then duct work for the swamp cooler and furnace. Then the electricians came in and replaced our panel and ran new electric. I was amazed they could keep track of all the wires dangling from the ceiling but seems to be in order now.

While this was going on inside, the roof was going on outside. In one day the old roof was scraped off and new sheathing was placed on. The next morning nails were being pounded at 6:30 am and continued until about noon when we realized the wrong color of roof was going on. So the poor workers stripped the whole roof again and by 8:30 pm the new roof was done. After that, windows and doors were installed and like that we were almost weather proof again.

More interior work came next with insulation being installed, final framing, blowing out walls and then drywall. Blowing out walls is a common cliche I hear and unfortunately isn't quite as easy as it sounds when it's an exterior wall. It took them all day to saw through and about 6 saw blades were burned up in the process. We finally got a sense of how open our floorplan would be and also how much dust can be spread when they are doing drywall, even with the holes in the walls covered.

This week they are working on finishing the drywall, doing floors, exterior and tile. More pictures to come as we inch closer and closer to being done. The back patio was completed yesterday and already can't wait to sit out there and get our backyard back.
