What to do with your extra fruit and veggies this year in Denver

One of my biggest pet peeves is walking through Denver neighborhoods in the fall and seeing so much fruit from fruit trees lying on the ground, going to waste. With all the hungry people in Denver, it sure seems like such a waste of high quality, free food. I get it, picking fruit can be a pain and very messy. Luckily, there are a few great options right here in Denver that we can all take advantage of to help save some of this fruit and help out those in need.

The first is called Denver Yard Harvest. This is a great organization that will collect your ripe fruit, leave you what you want, and then deliver the rest to seniors, community kitchens and charities that distribute food to those who are at risk of going without fresh, healthy food. Visit yardharvest.orgto find out more about the program, put your house on their list and volunteer.

The second is AmpleHarvest.org. AmpleHarvest.org has an extensive network of local food banks and pantries that will gladly accept your extra veggies from your garden. We will all come to a point where we can't give away enough zucchini and so when we get there, visit ampleharvest.orgto find a donation spot. I was amazed by how many are in my neighborhood and so close by.

And finally, Urbiculture Community Farmswww.UCFarms.org, also has a "No-fruit left behind" program. And Produce for Pantries is great great program similar to AmpleHarvest.org.http://produceforpantries.com/As you can see, absolutely no reason to let your extra fruit and veggies go to waste this year when there are so many willing to help you get rid of them for free.
