Being a Realtor, I get asked all the time where I live. It is a question I look forward to because it is easy to go on and on about why I love living in the Highlands. It seems like most people these days are familiar with the Highlands so it doesn't need much explanation but I thought it wouldn't hurt to list five items that make it feel like home to me.
1) Food. I'm a foodie and I love the options you can find around the Highlands. There are so many choices and from my house I can walk to Highlands Square and the Berkeley District to get everything from Greek to Italian to Mexican to Native American. There is nothing better than having a great meal and being able to walk home with the sun setting behind me.
2)Events. It seems like there is always something going on in the Highlands. This weekend of course is Viva Streets on Tennyson Street. A giant block party with our neighbors and friends, hard to beat that. Soon we will be welcoming the Sunnyside Music Fest and every First Friday I can plan on hitting up Art Walk. Throw in farmer's markets, Horseshoe Market, Highland Street Fair and the countless smaller events happening weekly and you are guaranteed never to be bored.
3) Houses and neighbors. I love the architecture and more importantly, the people living in our neighborhood. When I moved into my house 2 years ago, one of the first things I did is put up a privacy fence. But I couldn't bring myself to put one up on the south side because those neighbors, and their neighbors, and their neighbors have all become our closest friends and we spend countless weekends walking back and forth bouncing between yards. There is a real sense of community which I think is hard to find in a city of millions.
4) Location. I can ride my bike everywhere and walk almost anywhere too. Want to go to a Rockies game, a 15 minute ride to Downtown. Want to get to the mountains quick, hope on I-70 and I'm there in no time. The location is hard to beat and the best thing is, I almost never have to deal with I-25.
5) Parks and outdoor space. In the greater Highlands area, we have at least 7 large parks to enjoy. When you are 5 minutes from Downtown, lots of parks don't come to mind. But I can't tell you how refreshing it is to be able to walk down the block to a park and get away from the hectic city life. I love living in Denver, but I do need some nature around me every once in awhile and Highlands has plenty to offer in those regards too.
