Since 2000, the former 4,700 acre site which housed the Stapleton International Airport has been redeveloped into one of the nation's largest urban mixed-use infill developments. Stapleton has a projected build out of 30,000 residents and expects to provide employment for 35,000 workers.
A critical part of this redevelopment plan is to connect the Stapleton community north and south of I-70. This will be done through two separate but coordinated projects: the City and County of Denver (CCD), the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) and the Federal Highway Administration's (FHWA's) Central Park Boulevard Interchange Project, which will connect Central Park Blvd. with I-70 and I-270; and Forest City Stapleton and Park Creek Metro District's Central Park Blvd. Connections Project, from 36th Ave. north to Northfield Blvd.
The design build contract for the Central Park Blvd Interchange with I-70 Project was awarded to SEMA Construction, Inc. on January 29, 2010. And, now the project is ready to launch with projected completion date of November, 2011!
The project, which includes a new bridge that crosses I-70, will allow drivers easier access to the neighborhoods south of I-70 and to the Northfield Shops, and will also provide a gateway to the developing areas in Stapleton and beyond.
The project design is being completed with special amenities to provide a project that is friendly to pedestrians and bicyclists. These amenities will include a 12' wide sidewalk on both sides across the Central Park Blvd. Interchange, well-lighted pedestrian walk-ways across the Central Park Blvd. Interchange and tightly designed ramp intersections at each end of the bridge to best accommodate pedestrian movements through the intersection areas. The intersection design is focused on safety and effectiveness for pedestrians, and not just vehicular traffic.
