Just in time for the holidays, we've finished our kitchen remodel. It's been a really tough four months, but we're so glad to be done and back into our house. Basement living was NOT for us!
We love our new kitchen, and am really happy with all the choices we made along the way. No regrets at all - at least ones we want to discuss in public. (We'll save those conversations for later. Much later.) Needless to say, a major home remodel project was a lot tougher than I thought it would be.
Here's some before and after photos...
One of the biggest changes was knocking out this wall, and opening up the room to the stairway and backdoor. This made a big change, and dramatically opened up the space.

Since we have arts and crafts bungalow with lots of natural woodwork, we wanted the new kitchen to blend with the quarter-sawn oak in the rest of the house. No more white; now it's all natural tones.

You can now see the back door from the kitchen, where most guests come and go. All in all, I think we have about the same cabinet space as we did before, but has a much better work flow and plan.

One of my favorite features is the built-in hutch along the east wall, where our old hutch sat. Accent lighting adds a bit of drama, and the extra counter is a great bar area for parties. (It's already had a test drive.)

Love the built-in fridge too. Wow. Who knew?! Our old refrigerator was on its last legs. And we finally have an ice maker.

And here's some detail shots of the room. Here's looking into the kitchen as you enter from the dining room. We had the tile run all the way to the ceiling to add some visual interest.

I think this is my favorite thing: The new Dacor six burner duel-fuel range. Can't wait to get them all fired up!

A detail of the hutch and the fun tile we got from Trikeenen Tileworks in Vermont. Love the arts and crafts feeling it brings to the room. Our neighbor said it looked "happy."

Here's a detail of the backsplash tile. Again, we chose a palette of colors appropriate to our 1920's bungalow. You can also see the countertops here too. Love the leathered finish, that kind of makes them look and feel like concrete.

Much needed cabinet space with glass doors. Finally a place to put all those glasses! Our carpenter realy struggled to get these hung correctly. Good job Joe!

This is the copper sink. I love the copper sink. Although I hate to admit, its a bit tempermental. We've got to be careful with acidic foods, or they will leave a stain.

We really didn't have a lot of wall space, so we tucked a microwave drawer under the counter in the island.

Bookshelves too... for all those cookbooks. We also have a new linen closet to the right.

So, we're done. And I'm very relieved. It was hard, and of course, over budget (about 25%!). But we love it. Special thanks to Morgan Ferguson at Caruso Kitchens who really helped us put it together, and Rob Fisher at New West Architecture for his vision and leadership. We couldn't have done it without you!
