I think the worst thing about embarking on a major home remodeling project is the waiting. Waiting for every step to be completed, so the next one can start. We've been working on this project for nearly one year now. And I'm ready for it to be finished. As we start the third month of construction, the anticipation of having a new kitchen is slowly killing me. At this point, we've been either in demolition mode, or rough construction mode. We've completely ripped up the house, and are now starting to put it back together. The structural, the plumbing, the electrical, the drywall.
Finally I feel we're getting somewhere. This week, the cabinets arrived and their installation began. I've been a bit nervous about them. Throughout the design process, I've felt we were on the right track. But it was all on paper, and were only able to make decisions based on small samples and swatches. Since we live in an old craftsman-style bungalow full of arts-and-crafts detail, we wanted our kitchen to blend seamlessly into the existing architectural design that we love. Our house is full of built-in cabinets, beams and bookcases, all made of quarter-sawn oak. So we chose our new cabinets to be built from the same materials and crafted with similar design details. I think we succeeded; the cabinets look great. They look like the belong in the house, but are well-built and extremely functional. A much needed update from our old kitchen.

We've added some fun details too. We'll have glass doors on several of the cabinets, with seeded, wavy glass that looks 'period.' They'll be a few tall bookshelves too. And I'm going to love the new drawers and inserts, especially the ones specifically-designed for my spices. All the trim around the doors and ledges will match the other woodwork in the house too. In the photos, you'll also see the new structural beam that was set in place to hold up the roof after we removed the wall. We're going to wrap the beam in the same wood from which the cabinets are made, which mimics the beams we have in the adjoining dining and living room.
Stay tuned. More fun to come, including the new appliances, the countertops and backsplash tile. I can't wait.
