How can I go more green? Using water wisely in Denver, the often forgotten "green" component

How can I live a more green lifestyle? We hear that a lot as Realtors and dealing with houses on a daily basis, the obvious answerthat pop to ourbrainsare items like solar, energy efficient appliances, new insulation, etc. The aspect we often forget about though is perhaps the most important to our survival, water.

Unfortunately, water is theoften forgotten aspect of the "green" movement. Perhaps because it isn't sexy, can't be solved by driving a hybrid, and you can'treally buy fancy gadgetsto truly solve the problem, it oftentimes is ignored. But considering that the human body isup to 70percent water, let's face it, its kind of important. So just as critical it is for us to conserve gas and electricity, it is equally important to conserve water, especially in a state like ours.

Consider this. In 2004, the city of Aurora almost ran out of water. Read that again so it sinks in and just imagine turning on the tap in your kitchen with nothing coming out. If we didn't have an increase of moisture in 2005, this is the situation Aurorawould have faced. With a continued drought in the forecast, more people moving to our great state, global warming melting the snow packsearlier and earlier each year, and increased demands from down stream and commerce, this realty is not far off unless we make some drastic changes. The last time I looked, we hadn't figured out yet how to make water appear from the sky. So in the meantime, our answer is conservation.

There is a terrific article in the latest addition of 5280 Magazine that highlights the plight we face and what is being done to help our state with the impending water crisis we will surely face. It also offers some great tips on how we can each do our own part to conserve. Something as simple as fixing a leaking sink or taking shorter showers can make a world of difference. To help better understand just how much water you actually use, warning it will be shocking, visit this site www.wateruseitwisely.com and the next time that faucet is running for no reason, please, turn it off.
