What is the plan for Union Station in Downtown Denver? They aren't tearing down the original building, are they? Fortunately, the answer is no, the original Union Station building is not coming down. But five years from now, the original building is all you will be able to recognize.
If you have driven Downtown lately, especially the area between Riverfront Park and LODO, then certainly you have noticed the gigantic hole in the ground that wasn't there that long ago. This is all part of the new Union Station redevelopment that will change the whole look and functionality of Downtown Denver for years to come.
In the area where now can be seen this gigantic hole, soon will be the Commuter Train Hall andthe Regional Bus Facility. This will be the central hub for Denver's extensive light rail program that is currently in place and continues to expand. It will also house a new bus terminal with as many as 22 bays. This will be the central location for all Light Rail, RTD and Bus activity for Denver with the ability to handle 10,000 people an hour!
The 16th Street Mall will be extended down to this new outdoor pavilion along with the 16th Street Mall shuttle. This will provide continuity from as far west as LOHI all the way to the east end of Downtown. Several large office and commercial buildings are in the mix as well.
