How well does Zero-VOC "Green" paint work?

How well does zero-VOC paint work? As I prepared to paint my new Highland home, I started considering my options for paint. I had always used Behr Ultra Premium and had been very pleased with it. But in a continual effort to live by more environmentally friendly standards, and the fact I have a pregnant wife who will be living in the house, I started thinking more and more aboutusing "Green" paint.

I had never used this zero-VOC paint before and after reading reviews online, I wasn't too sold on it. But after speaking with some painters, and learning that the newest versions are excellent, I decided to give it a try. After leaving Sherwin Williams with hundreds of dollars worth of paint, I was hoping I made the right decision.

As soon as I started painting, I was pleasantly surprised. The paint rolled on really smooth and provided great coverage. Cutting and doing detail work was no different than normal paint, still a pain in the butt. My new house had a lovely bright blue covering most the walls and while it took two coats to fully cover the blue spots that kept coming through, I am pretty sure normal paint would have taken dual coats as well.

The best part of the paint though, no smell! When I was done painting the whole house, people came over and everyone commented how it didn't even smell like paint in the house even though I had only a couple windows open and had been painting for 8 hours straight. I also noticed that I didn't have a "paint buzz" either. WhileI know some people would miss this, I certainly didn't miss the stinging eyes and headache.

I used the Harmony paint from Sherwin Williams and will definitely use it again. Not only does it have zero-VOC's, it also has anti-microbial elements that prevent mildew and a patented Odor Eliminating Technology to reduce common household odors. And with some coupons I had found, the price of this paint was the same as anything else I could have bought at Home Depot or Lowes. We were able to move in the same day as we painted and I have got to say, it looks pretty darn good. If you are painting in the near future, give this type of paint a try, I think you will be pleasantly surprised.

Here is a quick picture I took after my first roll of canvas tan over the lovely, original blue.
