Denver Digs Trees: Low-Cost Trees Available to Denver Residents

It's already time to think about Spring planting season - that is if you plan to receive a deeply discounted tree this Arbor day as part of the Denver Digs program. For over 35 years, the Park People have made it their mission to transform Denver neighborhoods, making them more green through the distribution of low-cost trees for Denver residents.

BENEFITS OF URBAN TREES

Aside from the pleasing aesthetic, a healthy green canopy has a multitude of benefits for urban dwellers. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization, trees help to regulate water flow, filter pollutants, absorb carbon dioxide and vastly improve air quality. If strategically planted, residential trees can even cool the air by up to 40 degrees. They can also save home owners on heating and air-conditioning costs by offering shade and insulation. Trees really are majestic and extraordinary, contributing to the overall health and well-being of a city and it's residents.

HOW THE DENVER DIGS PROGRAM WORKS

Buying a tree from a nursery can cost you a pretty penny, and in fact each tree costs The Park People $150 to provide. Thanks to generous sponsors, they are able to offer these trees to Denver residents for just $35 through the Denver Digs Program as long as you get your application in by Saturday, February 15. In over 25targetedneighborhoodsin Denver with low tree cover, the costis reduced to just $10.

Before you complete your application, you'll have to decide whether you're applying for a œstreet tree for planting in the public right of way or a œyard tree for placement further than 11' from the street. If you choose to apply for a œstreet tree, the Denver Digs Trees program will simplify the permit process for you with inspectors to mark proper spacing and approve the permit. The Denver Digs program has limited supply each year, so apply early to get your first choice of tree! Once approved, you can look forward to receiving and planting your tree on April 25th!

OTHER WAYS TO MAKE AN IMPACT

If you're lucky enough to have a yard already full of mature trees or if you live outside the city and county of Denver, you can attend the Arbor Day saleon April 25 and purchase a leafy, flowering, or fruiting treeat a reasonable price to help support the Denver Digs Trees program. The most fun and rewarding way to get involved however, isvolunteering. The Park People are always looking to engage volunteers with their planting projects, events, and outreach efforts. You can also purchase a tribute tree as a living memorial of a lost loved one.

Everyone can benefit from the planting of more trees and a healthy urban canopy for our beautiful city!
