Oktoberfests around the world are largely about beer, but downtownDenver's autumn celebration turns out fun for the whole family with a daschund derby that has to be seen to be believed, costume contests, food booths, polka dancing and live music.

Mountain Harvest Festival: Sept. 2528, 2014
Colorado's Western Slope town ofPaoniacovers all the festival bases at their annual celebration of harvest with live concerts, farmers' markets, beer and wine tasting, a chili cook-off, arts and crafts, and farm tours. The bounty from locally owned orchards, ranches and farms brings in revelers from all over surrounding Delta County.

September Splendor in the Rockies: Sept. 130, 2014
Seeing the aspens change color is an annual Colorado event. Celebrate the season in Gunnison and Crested Butte, where the state's largest aspen stand (along Kebler Pass) puts out a riot of color in September. Self-guided tours, farmers' markets, art walks, a harvest festival, mountain-bike tour and more make the month especially merry.

The beautifully haunting bugle of a bull elk is unmistakable, and every October spectators head to Estes Park to experience the phenomenon. The elk gather there, at the edge of Rocky Mountain National Park, to show off for their ladies during the start of the rutting (breeding) season. At Elk Fest, you can learn about these beasts' behavior, observe them in their natural habitat, participate in a bugling contest and see performances by American Indians.

Fright Fest, Elitch Gardens

Things get spooky around this time of year - especially during Fright Fest at Denver's famed downtown theme park, Elitch Gardens Theme & Water Park. This enormous fun zone transforms from theme park to "scream" park all month long during Fright Fest. From haunted houses to a free Trick-or-Treat Trail, there's something for the whole family to enjoy.

Chile & Frijoles Festival: Sept. 1921, 2014
This event is your best chance to taste of the pride of Pueblo a special, intensely flavorful variety of green chile. Served smoking on a stick, chopped and tucked into a quesadilla or sprinkled in salsa, it's the star of this show. Cooking competitions, live music, dancing, arts and crafts, and a farmers' market round out the festivities.

For beer aficionados, there's no bigger event all year. More than 46,000 beer enthusiasts from Colorado, the United States, and around the world will attend this year's Great American Beer Festival (GABF). The GABF is a gargantuan event, covering 188,000 square feet of the Colorado Convention Center. GABF is all about sampling. Visitors enjoy one-ounce beer samples from the festival's breweries, which come from all over the country, giving beer lovers a walking tour of the nation's beer-blessed landscape. The brewers themselves staff many of the booths. If you love beer, don't miss this event. Tying in nicely with GABF is Denver Beer Fest, a citywide celebration of all things beer in The Mile High City. More than 200 tastings, tours, beer-food dinner pairings, brewery talks and more took place last year, and the event promises to be even bigger than before.

Breckenridge Craft Spirits Festival: Oct. 2426, 2014
Fall's the time when spicy spirits become the perfect answer to chillier temps. Sip the best offerings from small-batch, artisan distillers and learn more about the distilling process in Breckenridge, a town with its own pioneering distillery.

Discover "spooktacular" Halloween fun at the Denver Zoo during Boo at the Zoo. Enjoy trick-or-treating stations while supporting Denver Zoo's mission to provided exceptional care to our resident animals. Space is limited so buy tickets early!

Driving into the small town of Cedaredge on Colorado's Grand Mesa, you'll pass row after heavenly row of trees bursting with shiny red and green apples beckoning you to sink your teeth in. At Applefest, more than 150 vendors share the area's agricultural wealth with visitors, who can also check out a classic car and antique tractor show, bands and much more.

Telluride Horror Show: Oct. 1012, 2014
Already famous for film, Telluride is also embracing the spooky fun of October with this third-annual horror, fantasy and sci-fi film fest in the town's historic Sheridan Opera House. The festival was named one of the 20 Coolest Festivals in 2011 by Moviemaker Magazine.

The Mile High City celebrates its vibrant creative community each year with Denver Arts Week. In 2014, this unique citywide happening returns with a lineup of innovative, inspiring and fun activities and events. Denver Arts Week takes place at seven neighborhood art districts, 20 museums and 100 art galleries, and includes the wildly popular Night At The Museums, where several of the city's greatest museums are FREE.

Denver International Wine Festival
