How are students assigned to Denver Public Schools? It is a question I hear a lot this time of year as the deadline to choice into Denver Public Schools quickly approaches. For those that do not know, you have the option to choice into any Denver Public School regardless of where you live. The question is, what are the odds you will actually get into the school of your choice if you don't live in that district and how are students assigned to these schools if they live out of the boundaries?
Ten years ago there were a handful of schools that everyone wanted to be in and owning a home in those school districts was a big deal. Luckily there are a lot more highly performing schools in the district now, but also a lot more grade school competing for spots in the best ranked schools. So if schools are important to you, it is essential to know how students are assigned before you buy your next home. Your address could make a huge difference as to whether or not your child goes to the school of your choice since school boundaries are the number one determining factor in getting into the majority of all schools. Below is an example of how they assign students.

Denver has created a helpful website to better explain student assignements for each school so you can know before buying your next home how important it is to live in those boundaries. I also encourage parents to visit the schools and speak with the principals about the odds of getting in from out of the schools boundaries. They are often very honest about it and most times it comes down to pure luck if you don't live in the boundaries. To access all the information, click here.
The deadline for the first round of school choice is January 29th at 4 pm so if you haven't submitted the paperwork for the 2016/2017 school year, now is the time to do so. Click here for more information on that process.
