Breaking News: Denver Halts Permits on Garden Court Townhomes

From 9news:

DENVER - You may have seen them popping up in your neighborhood. Some of them look like big boxes. The City of Denver calls them Garden Court Townhomes.

On Monday night, the council has decided to stop issuing construction permits for those types of buildings, at least temporarily.

Dr. Bob Vogel, who lives in Cherry Creek North, says they're destroying the character of the neighborhood.

He's the president of the Cherry Creek North Neighborhood Association, which asked the council to place a moratorium on garden court townhome permits.

Council Member Wayne New helped to successfully lead the charge to stop them.

œI've got one that looks like a prison to me, New said.

He says the problem stems from the ambiguity of the ordinance. It allows too much flexibility for developers, and they end up with buildings that look like complexes, instead of a townhome community.

Dr. Vogel says he was œastounded when he saw one of the newest structures go up and said they look like an apartment complex.

There are currently 6 developers requesting garden court townhome permits,3 approvals are pending and3 others are still being reviewed.

The council will review the ordinance for the next 12 months.

What do you think?

Is the city doing what is needed to preserve the character of Denver's urban 'hoods? Or overstepping the rights ofprivate property owners?
