Denver has been showing it's Pride for nearly half a century, starting with an organized Cheesman Park œgay-in in 1974 that attracted 50 attendees. The Center opened in 1976, hosting Denver's first Gay Pride Week that year, which evolved into the Pridefest that we know and love today. In fact, Denver hosts one of the biggest and best Pridefest events nationwide, drawing crowds of almost 500,000 from all over the country. Which is why, despite œsafer-at-home orders, Pridefest must go on- so it has gone virtual! There's no stifling Denver's pride!
Something to Celebrate
We may not be able to gather this year, but that doesn't mean we can't celebrate. And there is much to celebrate! A new supreme court ruling this month extends workplace protections to over 8 million LGBT workers with a 6-3 bi-partisan ruling. While there is still work to be done in the fight for equality, laws around the world are changing to be more inclusive and offer protections to the LGBTQ community.
Official Pridefest Activities
While the exuberant and joyful energy of Pridefest is something you simply must experience in person, you can still don all the colors of the rainbow and participate in this year's virtual festivities in your own home or neighborhood, like the Virtual 5k, special entertainment, DJ'd dance parties, online auction, and of course the pre-recorded parade which kicks off at 9:30 Sunday morning here! Pridefest is the biggest fundraiser for The Center, which offers incredible support to the LGBTQ communityin Denver. Check out the full virtual Pridefestline-up here.
Vehicle Parade
Locals in Edgewater, a community just west of Sloan's Lake, have organized their very first Pride Parade on Saturday beginning at 1pm, with participants driving their colorfully decorated carsin lieu of a spectator parade.
