Go Green This Fall

As the weather gets cooler and the leaves start falling from the trees, most people are not thinking "green" like they do when Spring comes around. Yet, this time of year is really one of the most important times of year to take a look at your home when it comes to green energy saving.

Here are a few easy things you can do to be more green going into the fall and winter seasons:

1.Program your thermostat- Most thermostats are programmable, but few people take advantage of this easy practice. Turn the heat down while you are away at work or play during the middle of the day, through the night and when you go on vacation. An empty house doesn't need to stay at the same temperature as when you and your family are in your home.

2. Make sure your duct work is sealed- Hire an HVAC contractor or take a peak yourself if your duct work is exposed. Leaking heat through gaps in cracked duct work is money (and energy) down the drain.

3. Caulk/seal exterior openings from plumbing lines and electricity wires- Buy a few cans of insulation foam and take a weekend to go around and seal everything, filling around windows, too. It takes time but it works.

4. Install solar panels- In Denver there are solar leasing programs available, where companies likeSyndicated Solarwill do an analysis for you, install a system and provide you with all of the paperwork to switch over your systems through Xcel Energy. Solar energy iscleaner, renewable, less expensive power and not as complicated as you might think. There are also tax incentives and new appraisal guidelines available for homes with energy saving improvements like solar panels.

If you aren't sure where to start, have an energy audit done.Airtight Energy Inspectionsis just one service that can help point you in the right direction and Go Green this fall!
