Evaporative Cooler vs. Air Conditioner

After a near sleepless night a week ago I went out and purchased an evaporative cooler. My decision to purchase an evaporative cooler (usually known as a swamp cooler) was influence primarily by cost. Sticker price with tax was 375 bucks for window unit designed to cool our modest 1150 sq. ft. house. A comparable A/C unit would have set me back over 500$ and would likely cause the electrical circuit to fail tripping the breaker.

In addition to a moreaffordable purchase priceit will cost me far less to run this evaporative cooler, just how much less? Assuming 7 hours/day in one monththe swamp cooler will use 84kwh or 9.41$ at an average electricity rate, the A/C will use 370 kwh or 44.80$. What about water? Doesn't the evaporative cooler use water? Great question, about 3-5 gallons/day or 90-150 gallons/month but remember that power plants are very water intensive, to produce 370kwh of electricity, sources estimate 150 gallons are used in the power plant. For cost effective, energy efficient cooling I choose to LIVE with an evaporative cooler than an Air Conditioner.
